My son and his friend are doing a Queen Medley that is not to be missed. Every act is no longer than two minutes and all the participants have been rehearsing for weeks, directed by Colleen Cooney, Jenn Walker, and Kourtney Ringger.
Give it a go’s after-school’s Musical Theater Class has been hard at work too. For them I chose to take the classic song “I Won’t Grow UP!”- oldie but goodie and make it ROCK!
I have been cast in Peter Pan more than once and I LOVE the show. The music is not hard to learn, although it is no Wicked or Sondheim. So, I thought it would be a good fit for an elementary school musical theater class. However, Peter Pan is a little dated and the reality is kids love School of Rock and Imagine Dragons! Plus, they want to dance!
What’s a girl to do? Call on friends!
I happen to know Andrew Sherman who composed music for the notorious break out hit DEBBIE DOES DALLAS and he helped me out by taking I Won’t Grow Up and making a RAMONE’s version of it. So NOW they can SING it and ROCK to it!
I call it Never Grow Up now. All the same lyrics just with guitar, drums and more ANGST.
I also gave the students the opportunity to choreograph. Their ideas are totally original and specific to the text. So awesome! It is incredible to watch them work together and construct their own story lines.
I am always excited to see their commitment and I know whatever I give in enthusiasm they will meet in return, as long as I am open to their ideas. I don’t really want this learning process to end but the show must go on. Hope to see you there!
